Are Fear, Procrastination and Excuses Stopping You in Business?
Have you ever had those times when you know you should be working on your business, but you only have about 20 minutes, so you just jump on Social Media or surf through the TV channels? Or, you see someone who you want to share your business with, but their in a rush, and you are, too, so you don’t say a word? This is the danger of all or nothing thinking in your business.
I struggled with this for years, and I coach clients all the time on how to get out of this type of fear, procrastination and excuse making.
Because, yes, that is exactly what it is – Excuse Making!

Danger of All or Nothing Thinking in Your Business
You’ve probably heard of the slight edge concept – where the choices you make daily ultimately will lead you to the success you desire. It’s about developing a philosophy around why and how you do things.
Remember, the why is the most important thing. When the why is strong enough, the how always shows up.
Let’s talk about philosophy. It’s really the key ingredient to success.
We all have philosophies, about just about everything in life
Some serve us and some are not serving us so well. In those areas of struggle, pay attention and get clear on what your philosophies are.
Your way of thinking about things…
I’ve shared before about
Circumstances or Situations
Thoughts about it
Feelings that come from the thoughts
The actions we take or don’t take, based on those feelings
And, results, which are what we want or not what we want based on those actions
If “How To Do It” was the answer to all of our challenges, we would all be Rich, skinny and happy, right?
And, yet, not everyone who WANTS these things has these things. Even though the how to’s are clearly available for most any topic.
You philosophy for your business may revolve around that danger of all or nothing thinking in your business – if you can’t do it all, why do anything?
The Excuses We Make
“The Formula for success is quite simple – double your rate of failure.”

And, yet, for most of us, our philosophy around failure is simple – do ANYTHING to avoid failure.
Know where is this taught as the secret to success. Instead, we hear things like “failure is not an option.”
When we see or talk to successful people; those who have what we want; we often hear them state the obvious about what they did to get there.
No secret script; or handshake or insider knowledge. They didn’t know better people or have some leg up on anyone else.
They just quit making excuses; got over worrying about failure and took action on doing simple little things.
The same simple little things that you may be making an excuse about.
It’s too late; it’s too early; they are busy; I’m too busy; I need to know more; when I’m successful; I’m a perfectionist….
You’ve heard them. You’ve possibly said them.
Your philosophy is always working – for or against you
Most of us deal with this in many areas of our lives. You can probably think of a few yourself.
Going to the Gym
Eating Healthier
Doing our taxes
Can you tell these are all things I have struggled with?
I can’t go to the gym because I only have half an hour and I really like to go for an hour.
I will start eating healthier after the holiday season.
Ugh, I hate doing taxes, so maybe this weekend….
Or, tomorrow….
And we all know that tomorrow never comes.
So, our next step then, to get out of this excuse trap is the change our Philosophy
Get Clear on Your Philosophy
The simple little things make all the difference. They are easy to do, and often, easier not to do.
One of the challenges is that we often don’t see results right away. Success is sexy; the road to get there is not.
We go to the gym – no weight loss when we get home.
We eat healthier – again no immediate visible results.
Sometimes, it’s the same with our business.
There is contacting, sharing our offer; following up, and following up. Will they EVER just buy the darn thing, whatever it is?
We live in an immediate gratification, results oriented world.
Time and consistency create compound interest – accumulative.
Understand the timeline of success – simple actions, compounded over time create the success you desire.
It doesn’t have to be massive action, although there is nothing wrong with that.
I’ve been sharing the story of my
10,000 steps a day commitment
I based it on two things – my regular walk is about 4 miles, and that’s about 10,000 steps and the theory of 10,000 hours to mastery. I just converted it to steps.
My philosophy around this is easy – health matters to me. I can do this. I want to do this, and yes, some days I don’t want to do it. And, my goal is to finish each week, month and year with an average of 10,000 steps. Real life happens and I won’t always make it.
I walk first thing in the morning most often, so I am positioning my daily action so to works for me.
It clears my mind, or mental clutter, from focusing on it not being done yet.
Then, I can focus more clearly on my business actions.
None of these are tough choices. They are what must be done to move the business forward.
Your philosophy is what you know. So, what do you know about success in your endeavor?
What are those things that must happen? Do you know what they are and how to do them?
Are you doing them? Why not, if the answer is no?
It’s most often some negative emotions we have associated with the tasks that must be done. Failure, defeat, humiliation, social shame, embarrassment, being judged – these are the primary ones.

It’s okay to feel uncomfortable at times. That’s what stretches us. In fact, it’s imperative to do this and embrace the challenge to see the success we want.
Changing your philosophy about it is key.

Getting Intentional With Your Calendar
Success starts with small steps and getting those small steps on your calendar go much further to making sure they are completed.
What’s on the calendar gets done. A favorite mantra of mine.
I mentioned my walk first thing in the morning and positioning my daily action so to works for me.
It clears my mind, or mental clutter, from focusing on it not being done yet.
Then, I have a clear mind to focus on my business actions
Those consist of –
Contacts
Marketing
Follow Up
Content Creation – for marketing as well as my products.
Workshops – live and online
Everything pretty much falls into one of those categories.
So, my calendar reflects time blocks for each area each week, where necessary.
How does your calendar look?
The Power in Consistency
10,000 steps on average a day has led me to a lot of great things, and created consistency in many other areas. And, it created a slight weight loss, and shaping up areas of my body that were in need!
It also led to more intentional –
Healthy Eating
Stretching
Weight Workouts
On the business side, it helped me get focused and intentional in those 5 areas of my business that I mentioned.
It developed me into a routine.
Systemize was my focus word for 2018. And, it has proven to be the perfect word as I have been very intentional with it.
I’m already working on my word for 2019. Are you?
When I fall out of consistency now, it bothers me. A simple check of my phone app tells me where I am with my steps each day, for the week, month and year.
Checking this also reminds me to check in on my calendar, and my business goals and action steps,
I create my own, ongoing Consistency Chain for the success I desire.

Easy to do, and easy not to do.
There are no shortcuts, but then do you really need a shortcut? Build momentum as you grow your own consistency chain.
Understand the power in your calendar and those single daily and weekly actions.
Understand the timeline of success
Understand your philosophy, and the reality of CTFAR, and how it affects you.
In order for things to change, YOU have to change. And, be the catalyst for your own change.
Start now. Today. Don’t wait.
