Talk is Cheap – Build Your Network Marketing
Business First, Before the Big Claims
.
One of the biggest Business Buzzkills for me in my network marketing business is when someone tells me everything fabulous they are going to do in the business BEFORE they sign up; or before they do anything.
I’ve been told everything from – I’m going to be making your house payment in 2 months to I’ll be at the top of the comp plan within a year.
The minute these words come out of someone’s mouth, I immediately click a mental “NEXT” off and prepare to move on.
To this day, nearly two decades later, no one who’s made these kind of claims and promises has EVER come through with the goods!
This short video shares some details on a situation I just had from a new team partner who shared all of his big goals, and then what he said a short time later when he called to let me know he was “quitting.”
Of course, you can’t quit something you really haven’t started, right?

So, my mantra IS –
Don’t tell me WHAT you are going to do; go DO IT and then tell me what you have DONE!
Do you have one?

Hello Jackei,
Nice thought but not only for the business but for the all in our life, and is for all age group universal. love to share.

Another great post, Jackie. Talk is cheap (so the saying goes!) I would rather have my clients paint the picture of where they want to be – then break the activity down into daily action steps – and assess if they have the discipline and determination to complete those steps – day in and day out . . . than just think “magically” they are going to reach the top!

“Don’t tell me WHAT you are going to do; go DO IT and then tell me what you have DONE!” Love this quote.
Thinking back, every time I’ve done this and talked big about what I’m going to do, I haven’t done it. I’d be interested to know the psychology behind it.
But do you think a little bit of “fake it until you make it” is ok in network marketing when talking to prospects? It’s hard to get that first big breakthrough and get someone to join you when you have no experience and results to speak of. Or is this where you rely on your upline to help you out?
Jackie Ulmer says
Hey Damien,
Thanks for weighing in and your comments. I am sure there is a psychology behind it and most of the time those who talk big are hiding a fear of some sort. It’s almost like if they talk big and loud, they can talk themselves into action.
Show me someone who says – tell me what to do and I’ll do it – and I feel like I have a winner!
As far as fake it til you make it; I think that is a misunderstood “phrase” in business. Fake it in your mine? SURE! You have the think it; focus on it; BELIEVE it and act as if it has happened FIRST; just like Olympic and Star Athletes do.
Just don’t go around telling people you have achieved a level you have not; are earning an amount you are not; and so on. And, certainly don’t go buy the big flashy car or in anyway set yourself up financially for trouble if you fail to achieve something.
Contrary to what some believe, people don’t join you because YOU are making a big check. They join because you paint a big enough vision of what is possible, and they see THEMSELVES in that vision; they see themselves as able to achieve what they want.
I think 3 way calls and such are fine; but I would much rather teach someone the skills to ask good questions and share a bug enough vision with others that creates success.
Hope that makes sense!

Hey Jackie!
Love what you said in the video! I believe that sometimes when we talk big, we tell ourselves so many things that we want to achieve etc. and when we realize that we don’t achieve what we said we did, our EGO gets affected.
The moment our ego gets so affected and we realized what we’ve said doesn’t match what we were doing, we have no choice but to quit. Talking big sets us up for certain goals, and the only way to stay in the game is to achieve them. If not, we’re just going to run away and hide in our little rooms hoping no one remembered what we said.
Thanks for sharing this message Jackie, really appreciate it.

I appreciate your thoughts Darren!
Ego gets in the way a lot, doesn’t it? Being aware is the first step in moving it out of the way!

Jackie– this was a great one (like always). I can remember when I first started my business (back in 2000) I was so excited I just knew I was going to the top. About 5 months into my business I went out and bought a brand new BMW motorcycle here is a photo of it: http://smu.gs/12dvSmo anyhow I just knew I was going to be making great money in this business.
Turns out, it sometimes takes longer than you expect, sometimes it’s harder than you expect, sometimes your skills need some work, sometimes your personal development is lacking you get my drift.
Even if you are talking to yourself set realistic expectations.
Working closely with your sponsor or upline leader is smart to help you hammer out realistic goals. Also for your long term vision to become reality you must decide and take action. Like you say Jackie, talk is cheap!
Jackie Ulmer says
At least you were taking action, Michael and look at you now!
Great story, thanks for sharing!
