As we grow our teams in network marketing, leadership becomes one of the skill sets we must work on constantly and develop.
It’s important to remember that true leadership is much more than just a “title”; it is a way of being. Many people call themselves leaders, based on a title. You’ll know a leader when you see one; and you’ll know YOU are a leader when you have people actually following you.
Leadership doesn’t mean knowing the answers to everything.
Leadership doesn’t mean being “best friends” with everyone. OR being “liked” by everyone. It is about respect, however.
Here are some traits that every true leader possesses.
Trait #1 – Integrity – integrity in leadership means doing the right thing, at all times, even when no one else is looking, or even knows. It is having a core sense within you of what is right, and wrong, and acting accordingly! Your actions simply MUST line up with what you say. It’s not – do as I SAY and not as I do.
Trait #2 – Impact – Your leadership needs to make a difference in order to create what you want. You are here to make a difference, which often involves creating a shift in those who you lead. When you are able to create small shifts, that lead to success, you KNOW you are having impact.
Trait #3 – Influence – many people define leadership as simply – influence, and while this is an important part of it, it’s only a part. People are drawn to the vision of a true leader. Influence is earned through your actions, integrity and “who” you show up as on a regular basis. Are you the same person on the phone as you are at company events? Are you on time, or do you show up late? Are you a good listener, or do you force your opinions? The culture you create in your team will be determined by your influence.
Trait #4 – Initiative – Be the first to step forward! Get off the sidelines and take initiative. Never ask your team to do what you are not willing to do. Never lead on theory! Be the first one to test any methods and then share and encourage by sharing your story of what you experienced. Give your team the gift of going second! Do the thing that isn’t always easy to do, and you have a much higher chance of creating duplication.
Trait #5 – Insight – the ability to look at challenging concepts or obstacles, step back and offer wisdom and effective approaches to overcoming them. Good listening is a part of this. Look at what is happening, and all of the pieces and then determine a course of action.
Rate yourself in each of these areas and see where you “Stack Up!” Then, work regularly to hit a 10 in each one!
