How many calls does it take a day to be successful in your Direct Sales business?
I recently read a training article by a network marketer who revealed that his theory to success in his MLM business is making 75 to 100 dials a day to prospects.
That really got me thinking about Network Marketing in general and the duplication theory. How duplicable is it to expect that those who you enroll, especially if they are new to the industry, will really find making that many calls a day acceptable? How many will even get started in their business if they are taught that this is the way to success?
I know for me, had my sponsor introduced that to me as part of the business plan, I would have never signed up. I would have found something else. Not to suggest that a system like that won’t lead to success, but what are the odds of finding many people willing to take on the task?
Where does one go about finding 100 people to call in a day? The Warm Market list? The phone book? Some worn out leads list?
How many hang ups would it take before your new member quits, never to be heard from again?
In my 17 years in this industry, I have to say I have never called 100 people in one day. Today, even as a six figure income earner, I average three to ten calls a day and these are to people who come to me through the internet, fill out the form on my website and ask me to contact them. They know who I am; they are expecting me to call!
This is a much warmer contact, to say the least.
What image does it give about our industry to someone if they are coached to make these 100 dials a day? Is that what it really takes to make it in the business and how many people are truly willing to do this?
I subscribe to the law of attraction theory and am much more focused on creating a relationship based business filled with people who are interested, excited and ready to follow a much simpler plan. I am committed to having fun in my business and 100 dials a day, to anyone, does not sound like fun or something that would keep my interest for very long.
How about you? Are you up for 100 dials a day?
What am I missing?

Hi Jackie,
I think it just depends on your personality and skill set. If you are someone that has been working ques in a cubical for years taking calls prior to network marketing, then that may be how your able to transition into the business. I think for most people though, making cold calls is not something they are mentally ready to tackle, especially if they are just starting out with no previous sales experience.

Thanks for the feedback Steven!

If I had budget to make 100 calls per day I certainly would. But to unqualified leads,no way! Great post Jackie!
Jackie Ulmer says
Thanks Quinton! Yes, nothing worse than unqualified!

Hi Jackie,
It’s funny, because when I first got into network marketing, this was almost exactly my plan. I think I was going to call about 60 a day. I had it all down to a science. After the nasty feeling I got after calling about 10, however, I decided it was time to change the gameplan.
It would have been different if I was calling people who were open to what I was offering, but mostly I found myself talking to people who didn’t even remember requesting information.
You’d have to be a masochist to market that way. Like you say, it’s certainly no fun.
Awesome post, Jackie. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Jackie,
I absolutely had to click through to this post to figure out what you were talking about. I know I may think of you as a super-woman, but my mind went instantly to “WOW…is she REALLY dialing 100 people a day? Yuck!”
Did you hear my sigh of relief when I read your post and realized that it was not at all what you were saying?
This busy mom would never survive that. And how could anyone develop relationships and truly help people if they were making 100 dials in a day?
I’m smiling joyfully at your post because I totally agree!

Jackie, thank you for the great post. I’m glad that there are people in our industry who have the courage to speak against nonsense.
I would not work with a sponsor who coached me to make 100 calls a day. Frankly, I wouldn’t want to be part of a company that supported such a practice.
Jackie Ulmer says
Thanks for your comments and thoughts Pam. Part of promoting our profession in a positive light involves speaking out and speaking up, so I agree with you. Meet people where they are and watch them blossom from there!
Thanks again for contributing!

This is the kind of tactics that give the MLM business a bad name. The majority of people who have never asked for information do not wish to hear it.
Man, that would be a miserable life to live. I would just keep on in my job if that was the way to make it!
Jackie Ulmer says
Thanks Charles. I always like to work with each new team partner individually and see what his/her interests are. Then, we can devise a business action plan around that. I would have kept my day job, too, ha!

oh, I agree, people would walk away FAST…more like run…if they heard they had to make 100 phone calls a day. Especially Moms like me with limited time.
GREAT post as always Jackie!

Thanks Debra! I would have had my running shoes on, too!

Hey Jackie I’m with you!
I would of quit before I started if I was told to call 100 people a day!
Attraction marketing IS the key – talking to people that WANT to hear from you and welcome your call!

I heard Doug Firebaugh say that he double dog dared us on a training call about a month ago to call 100 people in one day. I haven’t done it yet. I’m thinking I may try it and if it goes well continue doing it maybe once every 6 months, but I can’t see myself doing it every day or frequently. I’m with you Jackie that I prefer to use the law of attraction and contact a smaller number per day.
Jackie Ulmer says
AnnaLaura,
Let me know if you do it and how it works out! If anyone can see the job through, it’s you!
