How to Build a Successful Network Marketing Business as a Busy Mom (or Dad!)
Maybe you have started your business and you are struggling with how to balance it all, as a busy mom or dad. You may be asking yourself – Can I really make this work?
YES, you can and I have done it. I have gone from zero to hero, both in my business and with my family, and you can, too. It wasn’t always easy, but what is? It was SO worth it, though. I’m proud of how the last 19 years have gone and what we accomplished and still accomplish today.
By the way, this is for the DADs too, not just the moms and anyone building a team, because a large percentage of the people who will come into your business will be moms and they will find this helpful, I assure you!
I’m proud of the legacy of entrepreneurism that I have instilled in my children, whatever they choose to do with it. They are both goal oriented and well on their own paths.
Today’s Question is – How do I work this business around my full time job and family?
Listen in for the answers and take notes!
I struggled a lot in the beginning and made my kids an excuse much of the time instead of making them my WHY. A leader in the profession “called me out” and said –
Stop using your children as an excuse and start making them your WHY!
So, after sulking a little, I made a decision and got into action.
Make your kids your POWERFUL WHY.
Here are some ideas for you:
Have a family meeting and explain what you are doing, what your business plan is and what you intend to accomplish for the family. Use language appropriate for their age range. Ask for their help and support.
Set up a business plan and schedule it on the calendar as best you can and stick to it. Then, you can show it as a reference point to the family and they know when you are working and when you are available.
Balance is a myth. You will be in balance in some areas and out of balance in others and this is an ongoing thing. It would be this way of you were working outside of the home, sick, etc.
If you are a mom with a full time job, try to schedule an extra few minutes each day to make some calls AWAY from the house. This is tough, but necessary. Even if it’s making calls on your phone in your car. 2 calls a day will begin to create the business you want.
Set reasonable goals for yourself and DON’T compare yourself to others. This is dangerous. No two people have the same life situation.
Be the best that you can be and commit to those income producing activities first, and avoid email except for specific times during the day.
Get very clear on your why; learn to let go of “controlling the universe”; and have regular conversations with your family about your why. ASK for their help and support.
Use baby sitters and consider a babysitting coop (details in the podcast!)
Don’t compare yourself to others! Everyone’s “life situation” is different. Acknowledge yourself for where you are and what you can do! Stay consistent!
Don’t use your children as an excuse not to attend events. Events are so important. Make it a family event or just do some serious planning. I have had my parents stay with my kids, pawned them off on friends for a few nights, or my husband was home. I had to get creative more than once and it felt frazzling at the time, but we did it. The kids had a ball most of the time and enjoyed me being gone too, especially as they got older.
And, at first, I made the mistake of planning everything, cooking and freezing meals, laying out clothes and being basically a control freak. And this was when my husband was home. After a few years, I let go of that one . Goodness, my husband is an airline pilot and he never once worried about what I would feed the kids when he was gone. He is capable and I let him be! No one died or was worse for the wear!
Develop a story that encourages other moms and keep taking those baby steps forward.
Believe in the power of your dreams!
As a mom, you have the ability to offer the greatest gifts of all to your children and your family. You have the ability to raise happy, wholesome and educated children. You have the ability to contribute to the family income without the need for make-up, pantyhose, or glass ceilings.
What a relief! You truly have the ability to “have it all” and “have enough” without compromising your children along the way. Grasp the opportunity before you! I promise, you will never regret it.

Thanks for the quality post Jackie. You are right that in today’s age and being pulled in a thousand directions some times, it is tougher to find time to work on your home business.
Like you say, having your “why” clearly defined will help you get through the challenging times and keep you moving forward on the right path.
Have a great day.

Hi Jackie, thanks for recording this podcast series! You mentioned your priority to cook nutritious meals for your family, instead of relying on fast food. “Fix-and-freeze” companies (also known as “dinner assembly” companies) are another option: the company prepares a selection of uncooked fresh entrees & side dishes, you drive to their location and pick up a month’s worth of meals, then freeze at home. Thaw & cook as needed.

Thanks Lynn. I have actually used the dinner assembly places before. My biggest issue there has been finding better ingredients – organic, whole wheat and those types of things. It is certainly an option though!

Jackie,
I would be honored to do an interview with you. Thanks for all you do!

Great Job Jackie, I really dig these podcasts. You are an inspiration! I have a similar story in that I was a single dad raising a teenage daughter. My homebased business literally allowed me to be there for her when she needed me. If I had a “full time” job I know I would have missed a lot.
Jackie Ulmer says
Michael! That is fantastic and I did not know that. I need to interview YOU sometime! Tonight, I sat next to a lady who started 30 years ago in our profession and she shared the challenges, struggles and successes. She did not rocket to the top, and she did NOT quit and her income went on to put her through college, and paid for her master’s and PhD as well as college and advanced education for some of her children!
THOSE are the stories that inspire me!
Thanks for sharing!
