Building a targeted list of prospective customers and business partners is one of the most important components of your Online Marketing System and your business, in general.

If you are in business, you need a list. PERIOD! Your Twitter following doesn’t count; Your Facebook friends  are not the same; although many of these might be on your list, you want to own your own email list.

This is not spam, this is “permission-based marketing.” These people have submitted their name and email address, and maybe more, on a form on your website or blog, requesting to hear from you, and giving you permission to contact them. It’s like a fan base, in a way!

A great list, treated right, equals a lot of money; business partners; ongoing customers, etc. Without a list, it’s very hard, if not impossible to be truly successful in your business. People who don’t have a list or who don’t know how to monetize their list, are not going to have the success they desire. A list is a great step in growing a relationship with people. They get to know you through the content and value you share.

I want to make a very key point here – your list needs to be targeted; having a bunch of people sign up who do nothing but delete your message when it comes in is not going to move you forward. And, you need to be very relationship based.

What does “relationship based” mean? You need to come from a place of authenticity; providing tons of value and content, much of which does not make you a dime, monetarily. However, it can create a fortune for you in the back end.

You need a list for a number of reasons and one is: people rarely buy anything from you on the first contact, and unless you have a way of following up with them, you’re literally leaving thousands, potentially millions of dollars on the table, over time.

There is no limit to the wealth you can create by developing a quality list of people interested in you and your message; building a relationship with them over time, and then offering high quality products that are appropriate to their needs. You must guard and respect your list though. No one wants to be “sold to” constantly. It has to be a solid mix.

There are three key pieces you need to start building a high quality list:

The first thing you need is a super high quality, enticing, valuable free bribe. You need to offer your prospective client something that will make them anxious and happy to hand over their name and email address.

The second thing you need is an email management system (typically called an auto-responder) that is going to automate this whole process and make it a snap for you to manage.

The third thing you’re going to need is an “opt in” or “subscribe” box on your website or blog.

So, for the first thing, your high quality bribe, or “free report” will entice them to sign up for your newsletter, and will be promoted on your web site. This free report must provide something of value, and also information on you and how to find out more about what you do. And, do this subtly, not a big “pitch fest!”

You are already experiencing this through this report you are now reading. You visited one of my websites and “opted in”.

Second, the auto-responder; this is what automates the process and you’ll want to incorporate them into your business plan and web site from the very beginning.

If you don’t know what an Auto-responder is, here is the definition -

An Auto-responder is a fax-on-demand by email. It is a computer program, stored in cyberspace that automatically returns a pre-written message to anyone who submits an email to a specific Internet email address. Transmission happens almost simultaneously. ARs are used for sales letters, training, follow up, product information and newsletters.

Third, the opt in box must be on your site. You create this “webform” through the auto-responder system you use. There is a tutorial and it’s not super techie. (I did it, ha!)

At the very bottom of the page is an example of my opt-in form:

You can see that my “bribe” is this report – Profit in Your PJs: Create and Build Your Dream Business Online in 30 Minutes a Day. Everyone these days wants to know “how it’s done!”

So, those are the basics to list building. You can get started building your list and setting up your free report and webform by grabbing your auto-responder now. Here is my recommendation:

Think about the power in combining your Social Media Marketing strategy with driving people back to your blog or website; where they can opt in to hear more from you!

Couple of final thoughts –

1. Protect Your List – don’t spam them constantly with Get Rich Quick, Secret Formula Affiliate Programs where they can easily see you are out to make a buck. NOTHING wrong with affiliate programs and promoting them. Hey, share the knowledge of good stuff, for sure. But, make sure you own it, use it and would recommend it with no compensation whatsoever.

2. It’s Quality, not just Quantity. Yes, a large list is great, but only if it is targeted and interested in what you have to say. A list of 200 who absorb your every word is much more powerful than 2000 who delete you message. You’ll likely never sell a Hamburger to a Vegetarian, right?

3. Be consistent – they don’t need to hear from you every day; but you want to keep your name and content out there. Otherwise, you won’t be perceived as someone of value.

So, those are the secrets. It’s not difficult. You don’t have to be an expert, you just need to be genuinely interested and committed. And, seriously, you must have a passion for online marketing. Not everyone does, and that is okay. But to have true success online, you have to be almost “maniac, obsessive” over learning and taking action online.

Isn’t it funny on Twitter and Facebook? Your number of Friends and Followers can almost seem like a popularity contest; or the higher the number can put you in “Guru” status. But does it really?

In our quest to have a high number of followers are we randomly following anyone just to get them to follow back? And are we following back just so they won’t stop following us?

I know the opinions on this topic abound, and you can usually tell a “Guru’s” opinion on it by how closely his/her followers match their following numbers, specifically on Twitter. And I must share that my opinion is slanted to the side of –

Quality, not quantity.

I was recently “followed” by a guy on Twitter with nearly 20,000 followers and less than 200 tweets. Honestly, what ARE those 20,000 people following? He’s delivered very little content and as I looked at his tweets, all I could find was blatant self promotion. So, what’s the point in following. I opted not to follow back, and yes, he quit following me within 24 hours. An automate system is doing the work for him, no doubt.

To really break that down, this guy has 20,000 people who are “following” him, but are they? And following what? There is no message being shared; no relationship being built; and no valuable content out there. How many others are out there with massive followers and no point or message being delivered? So where is the value? Where is the social interaction? What is going on?

My advice is to turn off any “Auto Follow” and “Auto Friend Finder” services you may have subscribed to. These are really not providing you anything except a growing number that means almost nothing. Set aside a portion of your Social Media Strategy time each day to engage in finding REAL people who you want to build relationships with – people who fit your target market and who you might be able to engage in business with someday. Enough of this – throwing it up against the wall and see what sticks.

If you have been using these features, I encourage you to go into your followers and see who you are “linked to.” It might surprise or even shock you. I share this from personal experience. I used auto follow for about 2 weeks some time back. When I took the time to look in my feed, I found a lot of content that I had no interest in, and some that was quite offensive. I went through and unfollowed anyone who didn’t fit my target market, or my personal interests.

Find people, and follow them because YOU are interested in them; not because they might follow you back. Chances are really high that they will follow back and if they do, that is great because you have already identified them as your target market, and so that is likely mutual.

Then, spend some time each day on Twitter engaging with your followers. Comment on what their tweeting and learn more about them. Build a relationship based on the social side of things first, and then see how business can fit in.

I would rather have 500 quality followers and fans, than 20,000 who don’t know me as anything more than a number. I may not be the most “Followed” or popular person on Twitter, but I do have a quality list!

You’ve likely heard the buzz about branding yourself in Social Media Marketing, right? So how is it done and why is it important?

Great question – easy answer; however it does require a planned strategy to reach your goals.

Building brand you is about creating awareness of YOU first, and your company and products second. We know that people buy into people, right, so that is why it is so important to lead with yourself. Too often, I see people using their products or company logo as their profile picture on Twitter, Facebook or YouTube; using some reference to their company name in place of their name.

This is a big mistake. And here is one primary reason why. Let’s say I am online looking for a home business. One of the first things I encountered online was “Joe Blow Big Mouth” who spammed me with his company and products and I could almost never get away from him. He is with XYZ company. And, now, I am not at all interested in XYZ company because I am assuming that everyone will be like Joe Blow Big Mouth.

Now, I hop on a Facebook Group and I see you there, starting great topic discussions; contributing quality content; giving great advice to others struggling on their businesses, etc. When I click to your profile, it screams at me of XYZ company. I don’t see your name; picture or anything that keeps me feeling good about you. Instead, I am now turned off because you are XYZ company.

Imagine a different scenario, though. I see you on the group, interacting and providing knowledge. I begin to see you as a friend, and even possible mentor. I click to your profile. There is your name and picture, smiling at me; links to your website take me to your blog, and perhaps a personal website where I can read more of your valuable content and get a better idea of who you are.

I click to your blog or website, and read more of what you have offered; maybe watch a YouTube video, etc. I am more and more convinced that you are a person who can help me achieve the success I want. I click to your splashpage and fill out the info. I am already completely sold on you when I do this. After filling in the form, I become a lead. You call me and we begin a great conversation about your business. When you get to the point of telling me it’s XYZ company, I view you as a friend, and so I tell you about my experiences with Joe Blow Big Mouth.

Because I am so sold on you; and don’t see you as anything like Joe Blow Big Mouth, I quickly move beyond my hesitations because I am able to see that it is not the company, but rather one person who did the company a disservice. In fact, I am excited to get started with XYZ company, and working with you, so I can help spread the good news about the company and help overcome what people like Joe Blow Big Mouth are doing to the negative.

See the difference? I am ready to work with YOU! I am ready to be coached by YOU! XYZS company becomes just a part of the equation in my success, with the strongest part being the bond I am forming with you.

And, this all started because you branded yourself as a professional; an expert; and someone worth trusting and listening to. See the difference?

I encourage you to put your company and products in the background as you move forward in Social Media Marketing. Connect with people and build relationships based on who you are as a person, coach, advisor and not as a distributor for XYZ Company.

What’s more important to you in your “friendships” on Facebook or any other Social Media Marketing site – Quality or Quantity?

I hope your answer is quality. What’s the point of 5000 “friends”  if they don’t know who you are; aren’t interested in your message; and are not interacting with you?

I wanted to share a simple, easy, POWERFUL tip on making quality friends on Facebook.

First, we all know that hitting our target market is a great way to generate friends, followers, interest and potential team partners more quickly, right?

And, a great way to take that a step further is to really focus on ENGAGING people from the beginning. Get to know people; seek to develop a relationship of some sort.

How many times do you get a random friend request and you wonder WHY they requested you; how they found you; and what you have in common? If you are wanting to build a powerful following, I recommend not just accepting everyone who requests to be friends, based on quantity.

Again, 5000 friends who don’t really know you or care about your message is not nearly as powerful as 500 who you have a real connection with.

So, USE the message feature when you make a friend request. Take the few extra seconds to request as a friend and then hit the Send a Message tab and say -

Hey, Joe. I saw you on XYZ discussion board and see we have some common interests. I liked what you had to say and would love to connect as friend here on Facebook.

Or, Hey Joe, I see we are both in Southern California and we have some common interests. Do you ever attend any offline meetups or anything? I would love to connect here on Facebook.

Now, doesn’t that seem more engaging to YOU? Don’t you feel like this person has a genuine interest in you and not just adding a notch to the friend belt?

Then, when Joe accepts your request, take it a step further with another message or wall post (not a biz op!!!!)

Now you have gone out of your way to be more than a “Drive by friend” and Joe might remember you when he sees your posts out on the news feed.

REALLY – strive to develop QUALITY and not just quantity. This is attraction marketing. Make it attractive!

So many get started in Social Media Marketing (especially Network Marketers); have no idea what they are doing and they make some serious mistakes.

One, of course is blatant advertising and spamming. Every Tweet is a link to the next best thing since sliced bread; they Direct Message everyone with their links. They never stop to consider that there are REAL humans on the receiving end. People like me and you.

I recently had a “new friend” pop into my message box and spam his opportunity link on me. Instead of just deleting, or being nasty, I decided to “pay it forward” and use it to impart some value and education on proper Social Media etiquette.

I have to thank Mike Klingler for being the inspiration behind this post and helping me think through my words a little more carefully on this.

Here is what I wrote -

Dear XXX,

I’m going to take your post as a teaching opportunity and hope that you will accept this genuinely and with my best intent…

As Dr. Phil would say, regarding randomly pitching your business – How’s that working for ya?

I don’t know you and so I am guessing you don’t really know me or you would have never posted this. I’m sure you have the best intentions and hope for your business and those of us promoting the great profession of Network Marketing online. And, this might be something you would do with a friend or someone offline

However, in social media and online, which is where we are, it is totally inappropriate to post (or spam as most people call it) your opportunity like you just did. It would be like me blocking you on the street as you walk by and forcing you to take my business card, even if I didn’t want to. Does that make sense?

What many people forget is that using social media locations like Facebook is like networking with people in real life. We are real people and if I wouldn’t want someone forcing a business card on me in the mall, I sure don’t like it online either.

Here is something worth remembering, to protect yourself and your reputation. Those who pitch their deal and spam online are ignored; or even worse, people will form a poor opinion of you even if you’re really a great guy with a heart of gold.

I’m proud of my track record of having built a million dollar business online without once ever spamming any one. It lowers the opinion of our profession for many when we keep using these types of tactics.

I hope I’ve made a difference and offered value to you. That is always my goal and I love the spirit of raising the level of integrity associated with our fine profession.

Struggling to set up a Social Media Marketing plan for your business? You know you should be doing something, but what? How does this whole thing really work, anyway?

First, keep the main thing, the main thing – The only thing you want to be selling, marketing or branding online is YOU. Not your company; not your products; not affiliate programs, etc.

Set yourself up as a resource for others and always focus on providing content and value for those who find you.

It’s all about building relationships and turning high tech into high touch by truly engaging people. It’s not having 20,000 followers who have no idea who you are or what you’re about. It’s about having a tribe of followers who know your name; know your message and are interested in what you have to say.

Here are some things you might factor into your daily and weekly marketing plan using Social Media for your business –

Facebook – login daily; make status updates; keep it a mix of business and social (your followers want to get to know YOU, not your “deal!”); acknowledge birthdays; make friends – find 10 or 20 new friends each day who you share common interests with; check out events; join groups and get involved in the conversation.

Twitter – offer value and social interaction through your Tweets; engage in other conversations going on; find new followers from your target markets and areas of interests; create more than just a one sided conversation.

Blog – create a new article each week for your blog; this piece of content can easily turn into a Note on Facebook; An article on an article publishing site; a discussion piece on a group or forum; and content for a video. Make you content ideas really work for you.

Video Marketing – create a video once a week for YouTube and other video sites. Brainstorm a list of 30-40 topics and make 3 -6 minute videos around each concept. Use books and other resources for your ideas and then put it into your own words. Upload your videos to Facebook and also use on your Blog. Again, make the most of your content.

Forums and Groups – Get engaged with PEOPLE through conversations online. There are always people on groups who know less than you and more than you. Learn from those with more knowledge and interact with them. Be a helpful friend to those who know less and create a following.

I highly recommend you read “Tribes” by Seth Godin and “Crush It” by Gary Vaynerchuk. Two great books to get your mind wrapped around the kind of “Community” you want to create online and the kind of commitment/action steps it REQUIRES religiously to make it happen.

It won’t happen overnight. And there will be days you feel like quitting. The beauty of the internet is that every step you take builds on the next and begins to leave a “footprint” that leads back to you. The more footprints you create, the more ways people can find you.

Choose the methods online that you have passion about. For me, I love socializing and building relationships on facebook; I enjoy blogging and writing articles; and I LOVE video marketing because it allows me to get the message out to both readers and non readers; and it creates more of a bond and a feeling of connection.

Follow your passion and always be asking “What can I offer my tribe?”

Although I have always viewed myself as a happy, positive, optimistic person, my journey into Network Marketing uncovered some flaws that would need to be corrected in order to achieve the level of success I was gunning for.

I remember my whole outlook changing dramatically when I read Richard Brooke’s “Mach II With Your Hair on Fire.” My hair might as well have been on fire because my mind made such a dramatic shift that I felt as if I was burning up!

It transformed everything. I knew this held the secret to my success. The exercises are simple. Concentrate on what you WANT to achieve and not what you don’t want. Close your eyes and mentally “see” the picture of what you want in your mind. See yourself in that picture and “feel” what it will feel like when you achieve it.

Practice this exercise 3-5 times daily and watch the shifts that occur.

This is essentially the Law of Attraction.

Like seeks like and positive energy seeks positive energy. Likewise for negative energy.

Think about your current situation. Are you happy or unhappy? Are you excited or frustrated? Are you focused only on the end result you seek or are you counting the white stripes on the road as they pass slowly by?

To attract what you want, shift your focus. I know, I know. It’s not always easy, but there are some tools that can assist you.

A few years back, I decided to become THE master of my thoughts and feelings. One tool I used was a fancy pony tail holder of my daughter’s. It almost looks like a bracelet and I would wear it on my wrist. When I would catch myself thinking negatively, I would pop the band and snap my wrist. Ouch!

Before long, just looking at that evil band on my wrist would immediately put me into focused, positive mode and I would feel the difference in my energy level and my attitude.

I learned to use this tool to increase my awareness and “Attractor Factor” when I would sit down to call leads. I practiced and learned how to speak from the passion in my heart about my business to others. I mastered the skill of letting go of my attachments to anyone else’s opinions about what I was doing.

What happened in my life is amazing. Positive outcomes began to show up consistently. I began to EXPECT the Success that I dreamed about, and guess what? It showed up!

I discovered the “secret handshake” of Network Marketing – my own thoughts and beliefs! When my belief is strong and my thoughts are positive, I attract exactly what I want into the business. Simple as that – be aware of and determine my thoughts and also determine my outcomes.

Some people are fearful when they first hear “Law of Attraction” and the thought of each one of us being in control of our own destiny and outcome. Maybe it seems too “Woo-woo” or out there. I personally view it as very empowering, very spiritual experience. It’s those times of quiet meditation when I am focused on simply being joyful and expecting the greatness of this world to show up on my doorstep that I have the deepest spiritual connection.

Author Paul Zane Pilzer wrote a fascinating book a few years back titled “God Wants You to Be Rich.” I encourage anyone struggling with the concept of wealth and the power of the mind to read this book and get inspired!

Dr. Wayne Dyer summed it up exceptionally well in the opening sentence to his book “Manifest Your Destiny.” He writes “You have the power within you to attract to yourself all that you could ever want.”

So, I ask you – What are you attracting to your life right now? Is it what you want? Is it what you dream of?

Make the decision right now to begin attracting only those things that are positive, empowering and what your dreams are made of. The choice is yours – choose to attract abundance in everything!
