1. Fill your pipeline. Stop making the decision for people that they aren’t interested in your opportunity. Every day that you don’t share it with them, you are making that decision.

2. Put yourself into massive action the next 7 days by contacting as many people as you possibly can. Don’t hold back; don’t pre-judge; let go of fear.

3.The next week, follow up with everyone you contacted. Don’t wait for them to call; most won’t.

4. Sponsor and train those who are ready.

5. Work closely with them to repeat the process

6. Look for those who are ready and keep repeating the process yourself!

The world is round and the place which may seem like the end may also be the beginning. – Ivy Baker Priest

How was your “Twenty-Ten?” Was it all that you had hoped it would be? Did you accomplish your goals, dreams and wildest aspirations?

Does it ever seem like the road is long, and it’s taking forever to get there? Like you’ll never quite get it done? We may be at the end of the year, but we might also be at the beginning of the journey. Life IS a journey. It’s a marathon and not a sprint. And having a good roadmap for the marathon is a key part of it.

2010 did not turn out at all like I had thought that it would when it began. In fact, it is quite different, in every sense of the word. And yet, it has shaped up to be even better. Sometimes, being open to the unexpected and not fearful of change is what will allow us to reach our destination much more quickly. And in the way we are intended.

It was a year of excellence in my family. Everyone had a healthy, productive and truly exceptional year, and we are so grateful and appreciative. It was also a year of excellence in health. We are all healthy and grateful for that.

It was an interesting journey along my career path and business. Life presented many opportunities and I was inspired with the thought to “let go and take a leap of faith.” And, that is exactly what I did.

In early spring, I took a “Business Passion Quiz” and came to the stark reality that I had lost my zest for pursuing my business goals, as they were currently written out. I was not following my authentic path; or building “my own perfect beast.” Somehow, I had sidetracked myself into doing “the status quo.” Maybe I was playing small; taking the easy path, or even hiding?

This led me to do some careful soul searching and ponder some serious decisions. Should I just “chase a paycheck” or should I make some business changes in order to build my own business that is in more in alignment with my values, interests and business skill set? My son was turning 18 and wanted to stretch his wings in a business, too. I have had a huge passion and goal for building an international, internet based business since October, 1999 when I started online.

I have been fortunate to have built two multi-million dollar business skill sets. (With the help and support of some great mentors!) These include how to successfully build a network marketing organization and how to use the power of the internet to get ranked at the top of Google; develop a brand in Social Media and attract my target audience, generating leads and business sign-ups.

All of these opportunities, questions and signposts led me to make some exciting changes. Here are some changes I made; and some things I learned. This is my 2010 in Retrospect:

1.  I started a new business partnership with a friend, helping small, local and home/direct sales businesses get launched on the Internet; found on Google; and creating a buzz on Social Media. Online tools are the “new” yellow pages and newspapers, and we know how to get people “found!” (Taking advantage of what I have learned and mastered over 11 years online now!) 2. As a family, we added a new network marketing business component. This fits in perfectly with assisting home, Direct Sales and small businesses with their customer attraction and retention; is highly internet based and follows my passion of building an international business. 3. I expanded my coaching, training and educational business for Network Marketers and Online Marketers. I believe so strongly in the power of home business and the internet as a tool for anyone to move a business forward! 4. Not everyone will embrace you or the changes you decide to make, and that is okay. I learned that this past year. We meet many people along our business path. Some are friends before and remain true friends; others are “business friends” and when that business relationship changes, the “friendship” can sometimes go with it. And, some people we met because of our business and they remain lifelong friends regardless of business changes. I am grateful for all of those who have shared this journey with me. I’ve learned so much.

5. Fear of change is deadly. I am passionate about living my life with as few regrets as possible. I don’t want to go “lights out” and realize that I stunted my growth by living in fear; specifically fear of change!

I am so excited about the possibilities that are ahead in 2011. I am embracing what lies ahead and look forward to sharing parts of that path with you, in some capacity.

Climbing the LONG Last Hill

Today, when I set off on my morning walk at Ventura Beach, I headed inland toward the foothills of the city.  Although I love walking the beach strand, with the seagulls, surfers, walkers and fresh ocean scent, I wanted a tougher work out.

I’ve walked this area before but as I came around a familiar turn, I saw a steeper road leading up further on the hill than I had ever noticed before. “Oh, geez” I thought. I didn’t want to do it. My immediate instinct was –”no, I’ve done enough, time to head back.” And, that second, small, inner voice said – “C’mon wimp. You wanted a tougher workout. Think how good you’ll feel once you are at the top.”

“I’ll just go half way” said the first small voice and I headed up. I had already put in a solid walk, lots of up and down the foothills, and my heart rate was definitely up. After a 15 second internal battle of the wills, I knew that I had to keep climbing. I had to push myself just a little further and get that extra burn and, more importantly, that feeling of accomplishment!

As I got to the top and turned around to head back down, I stopped in my tracks. The view was stunning. All of Ventura Harbor, the Channel Islands and the wide open ocean spread out before me. A sailboat regatta was just coming out of the harbor along with 2 charter boats of visitors to the islands. Surfer’s Point was off to the right and the water was filled with surfers, anticipating the next great wave. I couldn’t believe my payoff for making the climb!

What if I had cut it short and missed the view from the top? What if I had decided that enough was enough and I would just “settle” for the norm? What if I had let the first small voice win out and determine my destiny for that day?

Do you ever do this in your business? I sure have. My network marketing career has been filled with days of “settling.” I’ve had goals of making 10 dials and stopped after making the first call when someone hung up on me. I’ve made a business plan for the next day and scrapped it in favor of reading a good book because that was easier.

Ultimately, though, over time, I made the decision to keep going. Once I realized that it wasn’t going to kill me, I made the decision to push myself a little more. And, then a little more. And, even more!

There are many hills to climb in building a Network Marketing business and many pop up when you least expect it. Sometimes, you’ll come around a corner and see a really long hill that you hadn’t seen before. You know you’ve walked that path, but you swear that hill wasn’t there before. You have to climb that long, last hill for the day. You have to climb it every time it shows up. You may be tired, out of breath and out of water, but you do have it in you to keep pushing forward.

Just like the view of the harbor from the top of the hill on my walk, the view from the top of your successful network marketing business is incredible. Indescribable, even. Filled with things you can’t even imagine.

On a recent call with John Fogg, he asked me what the best thing has been for me about network marketing. Without missing a beat, or thinking it through, I answered with the very first thing that came to mind – personal peace, satisfaction and the feeling of accomplishment.

It’s not the money; the title; the plaques and awards. Those are nice, and they felt good at the time. But nothing even comes close to the feeling I have knowing that I did it. I hit the top 1% or smaller of network marketers. I pushed against the odds and overcame the biggest obstacle of all, myself, and made it to the top.

Nothing can ever take that away. Nothing. It’s mine and I own it. I want you to own it, too. Put on your walking shoes and take the journey to the top. You can’t even imagine what you will find there.

Does this sound oversimplified for succeeding in a business of your own?

Pick a business; or stick with the one you are in. Take the action steps that those who are already successful are coaching you to take. Keep doing it over and over again.

3 simple steps, and yet not so simple, obviously, because people quit business they never actually started every single day. Why is that?

My guess is, it comes down to FEAR. Fear of what the neighbors think; fear of not being successful; fear of being successful; fear of __________.

Here’s a challenge for you, though. Just do it! (Sorry Nike.)

You have to just do it.

What do you have to lose, really? If you just do what needs to be done, consistently and with passion, you will succeed. Everyone who follows this path does.

Why should you be any different?

Choose to be different.

Choose to be among the 3% and not among the masses.

Choose success and I promise you will not regret it.

“Reflect Each Day On All You Have To Be Grateful For And You Will Receive More To Be Grateful For.” -Chuck Danes

Last night, while on my evening walk, I had traveled about a mile when I realized I was knee deep in negative thinking. I was stewing over this issue and grumbling over that little thing. And, it was really getting in the way of my walk.

It’s been an interesting summer of changes for me, and while I choose to look at the door opening instead of focusing on the one closing, some of the events left me really feeling like I had made some business choices that were a mistake. And, yet, there are really no mistakes. Only powerful learning experiences. But, that is for another day.

So as I looked around and caught myself in this “stinking thinking” phase, I clapped my hands together hard (thanks Anthony Robbins) and decided to focus on appreciating my environment; the walk and my health; and all that I encountered along the way. This was going to take me much further than mentally fighting a battle that is already over.

It’s amazing how when we get into the spirit of practicing gratitude and appreciation, how small our challenges become. And, how much more there is to be grateful for and appreciate.

As I looked up, I was passing a house where the flowers are always neat and beautiful. It’s always decorated cheerfully to fit the season and holiday. Inside the house, is an older couple who still care for their middle aged, Down Syndrome daughter.  I regularly see them out walking; gathering pinecones and celebrating each day. As I passed by today, a neighbor was delivering a pie or some sort of dessert. Wow, people still do that? I love it! What an expression of the little things and the joy they bring.

It was easy to get into a state of extreme gratitude and continue on my way.

A few blocks later, I passed three children jumping up and down on a trampoline and giggling like crazy. Again, it brought a smile to my face and appreciation for such a wonderful walk filled with fun.

As I continued on, I passed yet another house where a family of 9 live; 7 kids, the youngest of whom is about 4 and is also a Down’s Syndrome child. On this evening, she was out watering the flowers that also line that house. Inside, I could see some of the family setting the dinner table and lots of family chatter could be heard.

I felt like I was peeking in on the Walton’s.

Now, what was it I was being so cranky about as I began my walk? How bad are my troubles, really?

I have my health; my amazing and supportive family; great friends; amazing business associates. I live in a beautiful place; spend lazy time on weekends soaking up sun in a boat on a lake; and spend other weekends on the beach.

I have the ability and the knowledge to create anything I want out of my life, so why let a few bumps in the road bring me down? Why put my focus there; when there is so much more to be gained through appreciation and gratitude?

One thing I learned along my journey in building my own business is that the true prize is in ENJOYING the journey and every step of the way. And, there is always a little rain on any journey of length.

So, my focus now is squarely back on gratitude and appreciation. I appreciate you for sharing this piece of the journey with me!

One of my newsletter readers asked this question of me and I thought it was so good, the answers might assist some others. Brian writes:

I’m hoping you can answer my question. With so many distributors using social media is it still possible for me to achieve the goals I want to achieve using it as well?

To answer this, I’m going to share a few stories and analogies.

When I shop at my local Target; Barnes and Noble; Pier 1 shopping center, there are 4 Starbucks within that intersection. There is one in the Target store; one in Barnes and Noble; a stand alone in the food court area of the shopping center, and across the street, where the Marshall’s and JoAnn’s stores are, there is another stand alone Starbucks store. It’s located in Redlands, California, with a population of under 75,000 people.

Starbucks recently closed quite a few stores that weren’t doing so well, and yet all 4 of these stores remain open. And, each one hits a different demographic and “timing” for its customers.

Fresno, California, with a population of around 500,000 had 7 top earning representatives from my first company, back in the 90s.

Now, compare that to the Internet. We know that over 400,000,000 people are on Facebook. There are nearly 2 billion internet users worldwide.

Remember that success in sponsoring into your business is based on a few key components:

Timing of the prospect. I could not have been less interested in Network Marketing when it was first presented to me. Fast forward 15 months; home with a new baby and I want to make sure I never have to go back to work outside of my home. My timing was perfect at that moment and I joined.

You and the relationship you have with the prospect. People join people. Far too few people remember that online. They think that Social Media is about “spamming” everyone with their opportunity; throwing mud against the wall to see what sticks.

The opportunity you offer – make sure you have something solid, both in products and compensation plan; support and training, etc.

There are some other factors sometimes, but these sum up the bulk of what’s important.

There are many ways to build a solid business and the internet is just one tool in your tool box. Everyone should start with at least letting their warm market know about what they are doing. You don’t have to ask them to join or buy, just let them know and ask them to keep you in mind.

From there, be aware of people and situation as you are out and about and if the timing is right, have an idea of what you will say and give to someone you meet so you can contact them later and see if they might be a viable candidate.

Offline networking groups and meet-ups can be a great place to connect with people; develop a relationship and then see, over time, if there might be a business fit together.

Now, we move to the internet and Social Media. Again, a great tool and a MASSIVE ocean of potential prospects.

The power in Social Media is that you have the ability to leverage your time and efforts in a way that “stays” out there. What I mean is this: if you attend the Tuesday business meeting and invite a few guests and no one comes, that time is lost to you forever in terms of showing your business to someone or making a connection.

However, if you write a valuable article about the skills needed for network marketing; or how to give an effective business overview; that content is viewable online from the time it is posted until removed. A viable candidate for your business can find it at any time; become interested in you and click to learn more about your business. This prospect may not have been looking for a business 6 months ago, but time and circumstances have changed and now it’s a different ball game.

The secret to success in sponsoring online is in developing your “brand or message”; building relationships with others where your brand becomes obvious; and seeing where those relationships take you over time. It involves consistency and commitment to showing up and interacting with your target audience.

Join groups and forums where you can associate with like-minded people. “Attend” regularly, just like you would you local Chamber of Commerce meeting. Always be asking “what can I contribute here?” Get to know people and be genuinely interested.

Over time, you’ll begin to attract your right audience and sponsor some into your business.

Have you ever thought about how the work that you choose to engage in dictates the choices in your life?

I recently had the chance to once again prove to myself how invaluable it has been to have made the decision to begin my career in Direct Sales and Network Marketing back in January, 1994. It has given me the ability to make choices that I might not have been able to make otherwise.

My good friend Megan called with an SOS plea for someone to drive her to Las Vegas for the day and back that same night. She has some medical challenges and currently is not supposed to be driving.

Thanks to my home business, I was able to help out; drive her over; have a fun day and come back that night. We shot a video along the way.

It’s worth noting that I didn’t start off a huge success. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. I did stick with it, though and am so grateful I have!

If only 1 in 20 people are achieving their goals and the success they want, what are they doing that’s different?

Are they more talented? Smarter? Better Educated? Is it hereditary?

The answer is none of those things. In fact, it is something so small that it may shock you. And it’s something that you can easily begin to do; and , just as easily not begin to do.

It starts with your philosophy. Have you given much thought to your philosophy? Your philosophy is how you think; how you reason about certain things; it’s what you know and how you apply it to what you do.

A positive philosophy is going to inspire you to make positive steps each day toward your goals. A negative philosophy is going to allow you to talk yourself out of taking those steps.

And, it is the small, daily action steps; compounded over time that create what you are looking for in life. Think about it – this is true in every area of your life.

Want to lose weight? It means choosing the salad over the cheeseburger, more often than not; it means walking for 30 minutes a day instead of hanging on the couch; it means being aware of the choices you make and choosing wisely.

Want to build your business? It means making those 2 calls a day to prospects, even when you don’t want to; it’s about attending your company’s regional or national event, even if you go by yourself; it’s about picking up that book and reading 10 inspiring pages each day.

Each of these things is so easy to do; and so easy not to do.

It’s not huge action steps that makes one more successful. It’s small, daily steps, compounded over time.

Ready to get more Bookings? Increase Your Sales? Create More Interest in Your Business?

Great, let’s talk about a powerful component to your sales and show process that we often don’t give enough thought to – your word choices! How carefully have you designed the scripts and language that you use in your party, sales and follow up process?

We have a tendency to fall into making our conversations more focused on “I” and “Me” and not nearly enough on “You.” Your goal is to develop a story that engages your audience as part of it.

Surveys have shown that a big complaint among home party attendees is the company representative who tells her/his entire life story. Boring – no one cares. Remember, you are building relationships and creating an interest.

Here are some examples of how to turn an “I” story into a “You” story.

“How would you like to eliminate one bill each month from your budget? That is what I was looking to do when I started this business. Did you know that by doing just one show a week, you could add an extra $800 to your monthly income? What would you do with an extra $800?

This is what I focused on when I started my business. That extra $800 allows me to make the car payment; provide guitar lessons for my daughter; and there is still some “mall money” left for me.

I never thought a career in Direct Sales would be a fit for me, and I was scared to death, actually. What I found, though, is that it’s a fun way to meet people and a great way to spend my “working hours!” It sure beats sitting in a cubicle. If you know of anyone who would like to have fun and add some extra income, I would love to send you home with some information.”

Now, think about how you ask for bookings. The most commonly asked question is – “Would you do me a favor; I really need your help; Would you like to book a party with me?” Yuck – that sounds like all work and no fun for the host! Where is the win-win?

Instead, sell the benefits!

“Sarah, it was so much fun having you here tonight. I would love to spoil you and your friends at a Girl’s Night Out! We could pick a fun theme like a Hawaiian Luau or maybe a Chocolate Lover’s Party? We have several fun themes that you and your friends will love. And, I’ll show you how to get those items on your wish list for free. Let’s get our calendars together and pick a date.”

Now, doesn’t that seem more fun for everyone than – Do ME a favor?

Finally, there is your Opportunity Story – how you share the way your business has changed your life and plant some seeds for others.

You’ll be sharing why you love your company; what is has done in your life so far and the future you anticipate. Consider using a “WHY” bag. This contains visual props that represent your reasons “Why” for your business. Choose 4 or 5 items that tell your story.

 These visual aids from your “Why” bag are very powerful in creating the story and impact. This is a bolder explanation of why you are involved; why others have gotten involved and why others might want to get involved.

An example –

“I mentioned my fear of getting started with my business a little earlier, and I wanted to take a couple of moments to share a few more details about my business in case you might be looking for a way to stay home; earn a great income being the boss; or you know someone who might want to find out more.

My husband was the one who first brought home the concept of Direct Sales and Network Marketing. And I was a big fat skeptic. No way was I going to do something like that! I really did not want to know more, but he insisted that I at least explore the potential. Even though I was skeptical, I was surprised to discover that I could not stop thinking about the possibilities that being my own boss and creating some really significant income offered.

What if I could out-earn my airline pilot husband?

One of the first things I did was write down some goals and I would love to share with you a few that have come true as a result of my business with XYZ Company. First, here are pictures of my children, then and now – my goal was to never have them attend day care. I accomplished that goal. They’ve never set a foot in a day care and I was always there to be their room mom; volunteer in the classroom; bake cookies and brownies; go on field trips; bring them home when they did not feel well at school; and be there with them and for them.

Another cool thing our business did was allow us to purchase a boat. We live 7 minutes from the lake and my son is an avid water-skier and wake boarder. You’ll catch us from May to October on the lake several times a week, and we would love to be there even more. (I have a toy model boat to show.)

Now, this next one is really a dream that I have had for years. I have always had the dream of a beach place in Ventura. That dream came true in August 2008, and we now enjoy both a mountain and a beach lifestyle. Here is our cozy place at the beach. We love having family time and entertaining friends there.

Finally, this rock, inscribed with the word PEACE represents peace. For me, it’s peace of mind that comes with no longer worrying about money; lack of time; a boss; a set vacation schedule, etc. The greatest gift for me about this business is the peace of mind it offers.

Success in a Direct Sales and Network Marketing business
DOES require true grit staying power.

Yes, it is true that anyone can do this business, and the reality is that most won’t.

Why do some stick it out while others do not?

I believe this largely comes down to the power behind someone’s reason for starting the business in the first place, along with their willingness to shed the “employee mentality, if they have one, and adopt a business owner mentality.

One has to be willing to try, fail, persevere and NOT give up in the face of adversity, or seeming adversity. There are many lessons in this to learn ourselves and to teach our children.

The question has been asked, first by the late, great Jim Rohn, I believe – “How long will you give your baby to learn to walk?” The answer of course is – “As long as it takes.”

Why then, will we not adopt this same attitude in our business? Why do we not realize that we are developing specific business skills that most people do not bring into the business.

The first time one steps onto the basketball court, it is often awkward and very few shots make the basket. Over time, and with consistent practice and “showing up” one gets better. Those who persist, often go on to star on their basketball team’s; go onto college ball and a very few elite will play professional basketball.

In most cases, the professionals are the ones who missed the most shots; practiced the most hours and flat out refused to quit.

Do you have this will power and staying power in you business? What do you want badly enough that your business can bring? How badly do you want it?

Success or failure in a Direct Sales business most often comes down to just refusing to quit when the going gets tough, and persevering to see the job through.

Where do you fit into that?

Have you ever considered trashing your PERFECTLY good business because -

a. No one showed up at your home party/open house?
b. Your first 10 leads said “no thanks!”
c. Your family told you that you might be crazy for doing this?
d. A full year has gone by and you have not sponsored anyone?

You are in the RIGHT place and the RIGHT time and are surrounded by people who have experienced ALL of the above.

Do you have true grit staying power?

I SURE hope so because you will NEVER regret sticking around for the ride.

If your first step “fix it” program does not work, exhaust every other fix along the way and you WILL rise to the top!
