It has given me the ability to make choices that I might not have been able to make otherwise.</p>
<p>My good friend Megan called with an SOS plea for someone to drive her to Las Vegas for the day and back that same night. She has some medical challenges and currently is not supposed to be driving.</p>
<p>Thanks to my home business, I was able to help out; drive her over; have a fun day and come back that night. We shot a video along the way.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s worth noting that I didn&#8217;t start off a huge success. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. I did stick with it, though and am so grateful I have!</p>

<p>Are they more talented? Smarter? Better Educated? Is it hereditary?</p>
<p>The answer is none of those things. In fact, it is something so small that it may shock you. And it&#8217;s something that you can easily begin to do; and , just as easily not begin to do.</p>
<p>It starts with your philosophy. Have you given much thought to your philosophy? Your philosophy is how you think; how you reason about certain things; it&#8217;s what you know and how you apply it to what you do.</p>
<p>A positive philosophy is going to inspire you to make positive steps each day toward your goals. A negative philosophy is going to allow you to talk yourself out of taking those steps.</p>
<p>And, it is the small, daily action steps; compounded over time that create what you are looking for in life. Think about it – this is true in every area of your life.</p>
<p>Want to lose weight? It means choosing the salad over the cheeseburger, more often than not; it means walking for 30 minutes a day instead of hanging on the couch; it means being aware of the choices you make and choosing wisely.</p>
<p>Want to build your business? It means making those 2 calls a day to prospects, even when you don&#8217;t want to; it&#8217;s about attending your company&#8217;s regional or national event, even if you go by yourself; it&#8217;s about picking up that book and reading 10 inspiring pages each day.</p>
<p>Each of these things is so easy to do; <strong><em>and so easy not to do.</em></strong></p>
<p>It&#8217;s not huge action steps that makes one more successful. It&#8217;s small, daily steps, compounded over time.</p>

<p>Great, let&#8217;s talk about a powerful component to your sales and show process that we often don&#8217;t give enough thought to – your word choices! How carefully have you designed the scripts and language that you use in your party, sales and follow up process?</p>
<p>We have a tendency to fall into making our conversations more focused on &#8220;I&#8221; and &#8220;Me&#8221; and not nearly enough on &#8220;You.&#8221; Your goal is to develop a story that engages your audience as part of it.</p>
<p>Surveys have shown that a big complaint among home party attendees is the company representative who tells her/his entire life story. Boring – no one cares. Remember, you are building relationships and creating an interest.</p>
<p>Here are some examples of how to turn an &#8220;I&#8221; story into a &#8220;You&#8221; story.</p>
<p>&#8220;How would you like to eliminate one bill each month from your budget? That is what I was looking to do when I started this business. Did you know that by doing just one show a week, you could add an extra $800 to your monthly income? What would you do with an extra $800?</p>
<p>This is what I focused on when I started my business. That extra $800 allows me to make the car payment; provide guitar lessons for my daughter; and there is still some &#8220;mall money&#8221; left for me.</p>
<p>I never thought a career in Direct Sales would be a fit for me, and I was scared to death, actually. What I found, though, is that it&#8217;s a fun way to meet people and a great way to spend my &#8220;working hours!&#8221; It sure beats sitting in a cubicle. If you know of anyone who would like to have fun and add some extra income, I would love to send you home with some information.&#8221;</p>
<p>Now, think about how you ask for bookings. The most commonly asked question is – &#8220;Would you do me a favor; I really need your help; Would you like to book a party with me?&#8221; Yuck – that sounds like all work and no fun for the host! Where is the win-win?</p>
<p>Instead, sell the benefits!</p>
<p>&#8220;Sarah, it was so much fun having you here tonight. I would love to spoil you and your friends at a Girl&#8217;s Night Out! We could pick a fun theme like a Hawaiian Luau or maybe a Chocolate Lover&#8217;s Party? We have several fun themes that you and your friends will love. And, I&#8217;ll show you how to get those items on your wish list for free. Let&#8217;s get our calendars together and pick a date.&#8221;</p>
<p>Now, doesn’t that seem more fun for everyone than – Do ME a favor?</p>
<p>Finally, there is your Opportunity Story – how you share the way your business has changed your life and plant some seeds for others.</p>
<p>You&#8217;ll be sharing why you love your company; what is has done in your life so far and the future you anticipate. Consider using a &#8220;WHY&#8221; bag. This contains visual props that represent your reasons &#8220;Why&#8221; for your business. Choose 4 or 5 items that tell your story.</p>
<p> These visual aids from your &#8220;Why&#8221; bag are very powerful in creating the story and impact. This is a bolder explanation of why you are involved; why others have gotten involved and why others might want to get involved.</p>

<p>&#8220;I mentioned my fear of getting started with my business a little earlier, and I wanted to take a couple of moments to share a few more details about my business in case you might be looking for a way to stay home; earn a great income being the boss; or you know someone who might want to find out more.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>My husband was the one who first brought home the concept of Direct Sales and Network Marketing. And I was a big fat skeptic. No way was I going to do something like that! I really did not want to know more, but he insisted that I at least explore the potential. Even though I was skeptical, I was surprised to discover that I could not stop thinking about the possibilities that being my own boss and creating some really significant income offered.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>What if I could out-earn my airline pilot husband?</p>
<p> </p>
<p>One of the first things I did was write down some goals and I would love to share with you a few that have come true as a result of my business with XYZ Company. First, here are pictures of my children, then and now – my goal was to never have them attend day care. I accomplished that goal. They&#8217;ve never set a foot in a day care and I was always there to be their room mom; volunteer in the classroom; bake cookies and brownies; go on field trips; bring them home when they did not feel well at school; and be there with them and for them.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Another cool thing our business did was allow us to purchase a boat. We live 7 minutes from the lake and my son is an avid water-skier and wake boarder. You&#8217;ll catch us from May to October on the lake several times a week, and we would love to be there even more. (I have a toy model boat to show.)</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Now, this next one is really a dream that I have had for years. I have always had the dream of a beach place in Ventura. DOES require true grit staying power.</strong> </span></span></p>

<p>Yes, it is true that anyone can do this business, and the reality is that most won&#8217;t.</p>
<p><strong>Why do some stick it out while others do not?</strong></p>
<p>I believe this largely comes down to the power behind someone&#8217;s reason for starting the business in the first place, along with their willingness to shed the &#8220;employee mentality, if they have one, and adopt a business owner mentality.</p>
<p>One has to be willing to try, fail, persevere and NOT give up in the face of adversity, or seeming adversity. There are many lessons in this to learn ourselves and to teach our children.</p>
<p><strong>The question has been asked, first by the late, great Jim Rohn, I believe – &#8220;How long will you give your baby to learn to walk?&#8221; The answer of course is – &#8220;As long as it takes.&#8221;</strong></p>
<p>Why then, will we not adopt this same attitude in our business? Why do we not realize that we are developing specific business skills that most people do not bring into the business.</p>
<p>The first time one steps onto the basketball court, it is often awkward and very few shots make the basket. Over time, and with consistent practice and &#8220;showing up&#8221; one gets better. Those who persist, often go on to star on their basketball team&#8217;s; go onto college ball and a very few elite will play professional basketball.</p>
<p>In most cases, the professionals are the ones who missed the most shots; practiced the most hours and flat out refused to quit.</p>
<p>Do you have this will power and staying power in you business? What do you want badly enough that your business can bring? How badly do you want it?</p>
<p>Success or failure in a Direct Sales business most often comes down to just refusing to quit when the going gets tough, and persevering to see the job through.</p>
<p>Where do you fit into that?</p>
<p>Have you ever considered trashing your PERFECTLY good business because -</p>
<p><strong>a. No one showed up at your home party/open house?<br />
b. Your first 10 leads said &#8220;no thanks!&#8221;<br />
c. Your family told you that you might be crazy for doing this?<br />
d. A full year has gone by and you have not sponsored anyone?</strong></p>
<p>You are in the RIGHT place and the RIGHT time and are surrounded by people who have experienced ALL of the above.</p>
<p>Do you have true grit staying power?</p>
<p>I SURE hope so because you will NEVER regret sticking around for the ride.</p>
<p>If your first step &#8220;fix it&#8221; program does not work, exhaust every other fix along the way and you WILL rise to the top!</p>

<p>And, if we are selling the dream, do we also paint the realistic picture of what it actually takes to make an MLM and Direct Sales business profitable? Do we share that it is by no means &#8220;get rich quick&#8221; and that it is going to take 2 to 5 years with a solid business plan?</p>
<p> </p>
<p>My thought it that we create a win-win for everyone if we sell the dream along with sharing the reality of the work that is involved in attaining that dream. We might sign up fewer people, but we also might experience much lower attrition and create more success for more people, including ourselves.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>We do much more than buy a book on &#8220;how-to&#8221;; talk to a few friends and  family and then sail off into the sunset.</p>
<p>For me, I just share my story, from the heart and speak only about what my success has allowed me to create for myself and my family. I NEVER share my income and NEVER ask others to share theirs.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Everyone&#8217;s dream is different. So many in Network Marketing sell the &#8220;dream&#8221; of flashy cars, large homes, second homes, flashy jewelry, etc. That has never been my dream so none of that was ever appealing to me. In fact, it was and still is a total turn off.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>I look through home business magazines and see so many of the advertisements with people standing in front of the cars and houses and I think &#8211; &#8220;Yuck! Big ego, wouldn&#8217;t want to work with that person.&#8221;</p>
<p> </p>
<p>They may be really nice, really successful, etc, but that first impression tells me I would not like their style of working this business and would not want to have them interact with my team or prospects.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>So, selling the dream, to me, can be done very effectively by sharing your story, ALL of it. Including what it has taken to get to the point you are, and the times you may have wanted to quit.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>I look back on my own 16 years and realize what an extreme personal journey it has been. In many ways, I am uncertain how to share that with someone who&#8217;s looking at the business. It&#8217;s been sheer grit and determination to succeed and reach the top.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>It was SO worth it and painful many times. Not as painful as what my life might have looked like otherwise.</p>
<p>Sell the dream; share your own story; and detail for your prospects what it&#8217;s going to really take to build that gangster income and lifestyle. Then, roll up your sleeves together and get to work.</p>

<p>Before we started in Network Marketing <strong><em>(kicking and screaming as I was a real skeptic!)</em></strong>, my husband and I seriously considered franchising as the option that might provide what we were looking for in terms of securing our retirement and finances outside of the airline industry.</p>
<p>At that time, we were not even SORT OF open to looking at network marketing. (Keep this in mind when someone tells you no!)</p>
<p>We even visited about 3 different franchise headquarters around the country. A few things were always a deterrent to actually jumping in -</p>

3. Time requirement, given that we had not yet started a family</span></strong></p>
<p>We recently stopped in a coffee shop in Orange County and I noticed a brochure promoting franchising opportunities so I picked it up. We read over it and laughed at what was required, vs what has been required of us to build a network marketing business to a level that essentially offers much more in terms of both income and free time.</p>

<p>It has been a long, but &#8220;worth it&#8221; 16 years. I started when my son was 18 months and my daughter was not yet born. I had <strong>MANY</strong> days of frustration because I had no time. When I worked my business I felt guilty about my kids and when I was with the kids, I felt guilty about the business. It seemed like a no win situation. There were many times I wanted to run away, scream, quit, fall on the floor kicking and screaming, etc.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve lost my composure more than once, but I have managed to regain it!</p>
<p>But, my other options were even worse. Go back to work? <em><strong>No way</strong></em>. Try and survive on one income? <em><strong>No fun</strong></em>! Or, continue to plod along and have patience.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s what I did. Each year became easier and the day my daughter went to school for a full day was bittersweet. She was moving a step closer to being out of the nest, and my &#8220;baby&#8221; was moving on. But, finally, I had <strong>TIME!</strong></p>
<p>Now, they are 17 and 14. They still get frustrated with my business sometimes but now they see the benefits because we are enjoying the nice income and &#8220;toys&#8221; that can come with that. I make sure they are always aware of each goal that I am working toward in my business and what that will mean for our family. They also have found ways to work right alongside me and get involved. They have become my biggest cheerleaders and have attended events with me. My daughter has even done some business parties with me.</p>
<p>Take baby steps every day. First, get organized. Talk to your spouse and make sure you have support, even if it&#8217;s begrudgingly. Set up some parameters and ASK FOR HELP. This is hard for women to do sometimes because we tend to think that means we are failing. You aren&#8217;t! You are on the road to creating an incredible lifestyle for your family and others. (It&#8217;s hard for men to do, too!)</p>
<p>Set an intention to make <strong>ONE HOUR A DAY</strong> for your business. Notice I said <strong>MAKE</strong> and not <strong>FIND!</strong> You&#8217;ll look forever and never find it, so you must MAKE time. It does not have to be all at one time. 15 minute blocks to make 1 -3 quick phone calls is fine. Take 30 minutes after the kids are in bed or get up 30 minutes before they do to get some things accomplished.</p>
<p>Make email a lower priority. Cruise through email and <strong>ONLY</strong> deal with business related emails first. Save others for free time.</p>
<p>Set 5 action steps a week that you <strong>COMMIT</strong> to doing for your business. Find things you can do to get the kids involved. Door hangers/flyers are great for this. Call for fundraisers, home parties, 5 people about the business, pass out flyers, pass out business cards, etc. Check into craft shows and Farmer&#8217;s Market&#8217;s where you can bring the kids to spend some time. Let them see you in business mode. Pay them a little for their time and cooperation.</p>
<p>We used to put flyers and &#8220;sizzle cards&#8221; on cars and then I would take them for ice cream. They started looking forward to it. So did I (cheap labor!)</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t worry so much about the background being absolutely quiet when you make a call. We are <strong>&#8220;work at home moms and dads&#8221;</strong> and we do this by choice! We embrace that those little noises are there with us! We are modeling for others that they can do this with their small children, too.</p>
<p>Be very organized about your home duties, such as cooking and cleaning. Get your kids involved and teach them about personal responsibilities. I love to cook and have learned to get my kids involved. We made Chinese food complete with Egg Rolls the other night. Lots of dicing and chopping and they enjoy this. That is <strong>QUALITY </strong>time that we spend together and we laugh and enjoy. And, I must confess, that is one time when my mind does not go to business. I love cooking and the whole process, so I am <strong>&#8220;right there&#8221;</strong> when we cook together.</p>
<p>Get them involved in cleaning up the house. Have a contest for who picks up and puts away the most in the <strong>CORRECT</strong> spot. Set a fun date at the park, or zoo, or out to lunch but the deal is the house must be picked up before you get to go. They will spring into action.</p>
<p>If you are a perfectionist about things, work hard to let go of that. Realize that the sun will come up tomorrow even if there is dust on the table tonight. Also, if your spouse is helping out and he/she does not do things exactly as you would, or put things away in just the right spot, <em><strong>OH WELL! Does it REALLY matter?</strong></em><br />
Get rid of clutter. Get rid of thinking so much about what you are NOT doing.</p>
<p>Learn to make your &#8220;to do list&#8221; smaller, so you can feel some personal success. <strong>ALWAYS</strong> make sure those 5 action steps get done and that they involve something that will build your business.</p>
<p>Give the kids &#8220;business jobs&#8221; as you make a quick phone call. Have them label your products, alphabetize them, etc. Just get them involved. When business time is over, go do something fun together.</p>
<p>If you have 2 hours a day while they are all gone to preschool, <strong>DO NOT USE THIS TIME TO CLEAN YOUR HOUSE. OR, RUN ERRANDS, ETC.</strong> Use this time to make calls, return important business related emails, etc.</p>
<p>Go easy on yourself and <strong>KNOW</strong> that this time frame will pass and they WILL grow up and be gone. Help them to be involved and love your business, too, so as they get older, they want even more involvement. You are giving them the gift of entrepreneurship.</p>
<p>Reward yourself for each success and <strong>DO NOT</strong> compare yourself to <strong>ANYONE</strong> else and especially those who are not in your same <em><strong>&#8220;life situation.&#8221;</strong></em></p>
<p>Those who work fulltime think it&#8217;s easier because you are home. Those home think it&#8217;s easier because those at work can sneak in calls and activities.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s as easy or hard as <strong>YOU</strong> want to make it. My passion about this business is in <strong>LARGE</strong> part due to my children. I did not want them in day care, nor to miss field trips, or being able to bring them home when they are sick, etc. So, my passion grew because my business allowed me to do these things and yet still earn an income.</p>
<p>And, like all parents, I wanted to give them more than I had (even though I feel I had it pretty good!) This business can offer all of that and more.</p>
<p>Allow that to stir your passion and give you the strength to move it forward, even little steps at a time, until pretty soon you are running and then sprinting!</p>

<p>The Party Plan business model in Direct Sales offers an incredible platform for building a team; residual income; all while putting immediate cash in your pocket through each event. It creates a perfect scenario for leveraging your time.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s funny, my own company has a very strong retail product and while we are not a party plan, I have spent hours lately researching party plan companies to see what they do, and how they do it. I want to offer this type of training and coaching to those on my team who WANT to retail and keep that easy, immediate cash rolling in.</p>
<p>And, I am no party expert so I&#8217;m in learning mode.</p>
<p>Party plan companies grow very solid businesses by starting with that warm market list, booking home shows and expanding their contact list through the guests of their friends and contacts. Imagine growing your list each week by 20-30 people, all connected by someone who you have established a relationship with.</p>
<p>Party Plan, when done most effectively, uses each retail event as a strong recruiting platform in their businesses. It&#8217;s really quite fascinating and different than some experiences in more traditional &#8220;Network Marketing.&#8221;</p>
<p>I think the reason for this is that the distributor hosting the party is immediately modeling for the &#8220;prospects&#8221; how to do the business; the simplicity of the business; and anyone who can do simple math can see the amount of money being made on an hourly basis.</p>
<p>Many people would jump at the chance to work 6-9 hours a week, and earn $67 &#8211; 75 an hour. That is in line with what many in my own company are experiencing right now and it is so fun to watch the difference that type if income is making for their families. Especially in this economy.</p>
<p>This is what a party plan company can do, and so it makes the prospecting and sponsoring process a little more simple because it&#8217;s not theory. Anyone attending a party and watching can see what the potential is.</p>
<p>With network marketing, we offer the &#8220;promise&#8221; of part time/full time incomes, but no one actually SEES us earning that income, pocketing that money right then and there.</p>
<p>While I have built both ways, online and offline, I personally prefer the online methods, and yet recognize that it can be a slower way to build; and a more &#8220;technical&#8221; way to build, which slows some down.</p>
<p>I am also embracing the value in the home party/retail model as well, and learning to factor that into my own network marketing business, for those who want to do that.</p>
<p>And, in today&#8217;s economy, I am finding many more people receptive to the idea of &#8220;partying for a living!&#8221; With the right product; the right price point; and the right personality, this can breathe some life into &#8220;old School&#8221; methods!</p>

<p>Some people need to sponsor 5 people to have a leader show up. For others, it is 50. That reality doesn&#8217;t need to discourage you. The bigger your numbers grow, the closer you are, really! And, with a solid, equitable pay plan, it doesn&#8217;t matter where they show up! </p>
<p>In my first company, my biggest leader came early on. Because of the way that pay plan was structured, my upline made hundreds of thousands of dollars. I made thousands on that leg. Big disparity. And, certainly not what I would call equitable. But, that experience became invaluable because it taught me to closely evaluate pay plans, and understand the good, bad and ugly. </p>
<p>Believe me, there is a lot of &#8220;ugly&#8221; in MLM pay plans. You may think yours is great. Don&#8217;t be afraid to play devil&#8217;s advocate with all aspects of it to be sure. </p>
<p>You may be struggling with the &#8220;when is it going to happen for me&#8221; syndrome. I know how you feel, I&#8217;ve been there myself. </p>
<p>And, it&#8217;s hard to hear &#8211; &#8220;Oh, just go sponsor another rep.&#8221; </p>
<p>But, it&#8217;s true. If you don&#8217;t feel you have yet landed someone on your team who shares your same drive and passion. That&#8217;s okay. They are on their own agenda and that is fine. </p>
<p>Your agenda, however, is to keep uncovering stones until you find one, or two, or twelve. Or, until they lead you to someone. </p>
<p>It&#8217;s tempting to think &#8211; &#8220;I must be doing something wrong, or I am not doing enough.&#8221; </p>
<p>Nope, not true. It&#8217;s not you. How do I know this? Well, there are some on the team who have a large team growing and really don&#8217;t provide anything in terms of support or coaching. I recently contacted one of my frontline people, who had dropped to inactive. She has a LARGE organization developing under her. I asked her if she realized what she was missing now, and what she would miss potentially by not getting back involved. </p>
<p>She is now on board again and we&#8217;ll see what happens. I don&#8217;t know if she is ready to build a business, seriously, yet, but I did want to point out what can happen. </p>
<p>That growth happened without any effort on her part. A leader was there and took action. </p>
<p>So, as long as you are directing people to the tools and support they need, and fulfilling your end of the bargain, relax. It&#8217;s not you. It&#8217;s not anything you are doing or not doing. </p>
<p>Keep turning over stones and keep adding to your frontline. Don&#8217;t be tempted to &#8220;stack in people&#8221; for growth. Go wide, wide, wider until you can&#8217;t control the explosion. </p>
<p>Start that snowball rolling! </p>

<p>If you&#8217;ve been in MLM any length of time, you&#8217;ve heard about the heavy hitter and the power in recruiting one. A heavy hitter is defined as someone who has already had success in the business, and is sure to bring a huge team, and huge paycheck to your business. </p>
<p>Well, beware the heavy hitter. While they are out there and there are those occasions when one gets disgruntled, his/her company fails, etc, and he/she goes looking for a new opportunity. </p>
<p>I have some thoughts to share about this whole process. </p>
<p>First, remember that the &#8220;heavy hitter&#8221; who leaves one business to join another, may just leave yours after a few months, too. Taking that nice downline and that nice paycheck along. You&#8217;ll want to know how many other times this person has jumped ship, looking for that next big opportunity.</p>
<p>Network Marketing is a business, and it is also a business about relationship. Some people see only the business side of things and are interested in creating income in many different ways. So, moving on to another opportunity makes sense to them from a business perspective.</p>
<p>There is not necessarily a right or wrong here. But, over time, one can really damage one&#8217;s reputation through this constant movement from one company to another.</p>
<p>So, focus on developing leaders from those who are sold and solid on your program and your leadership. That builds more strength and security. </p>
<p>On another note, I received a frantic call from a team partner looking for some fast help on a three way call to a guy who had been successful in another program and was burned when the company shut down. He was disgruntled for awhile but had the bug and wanted to get back involved. </p>
<p>He completed her online splashpage, and indicated he has a lot of experience in Network Marketing. When my partner called him the first time, he didn&#8217;t have time to talk but scheduled another call 2 hours later.<br />
We called together, and he still didn&#8217;t have time to talk, and re-scheduled for the next day. </p>
<p>In the meantime, I coached my partner on keeping her posture, and I want to make this point for you, too. First, talk is CHEAP. If I had a dime for every time someone joined my business and promised to be &#8220;making my house payment&#8221; in 2 months, I would be rich! </p>
<p>Talk is SUPER CHEAP! </p>
<p>Don&#8217;t let someone else&#8217;s rambling upset you or knock you off of your game. Remember this &#8211; you have a gift to offer and while you may not have all of the answers, but you have enough to give an educated overview and then call for backup from your sponsor or upline if needed. </p>
<p>Remember all of the things you have done in your business life. Just because you are new to the industry does not mean you can&#8217;t get your passion about your business and the industry across. </p>
<p>My partner thought over what we discussed and decided I was right (chalk one up for me and tell my kids!) </p>
<p>She is smart, educated and has done some amazing things in her business life. As it turns out he no-showed her again. </p>
<p>So, the &#8220;lesson&#8221; here, if you will, is that you have the posture when offering your opportunity and you don&#8217;t need any one person to make your business. YOU make your business. </p>
<p>Take all of the steps you can to educate yourself on all aspects of your product; the compensation plan; and how the industry works. </p>
<p>Have a step by step plan in place for getting more information into the hands of your prospect. </p>
<p>Know what you have and be SOLID in your belief in it. From then on, treat everyone you speak to about the business equally and allow the ones who are right to attract to you. They will! </p>
<p>And, no more watching for those &#8220;heavy hitters!&#8221; Create a few of your own, including YOU! </p>
