Are you ready to be a Leader in your direct sales or Network Marketing business? Do you wonder what that means exactly? Do you think you have to have a downline to be a leader?

Here’s some good news – you don’t. To begin with, you are a leader of one – YOU! How brilliant is that?

Leadership is so much more than just achieving a title within your company. Leadership encompasses who you are; the message you deliver through your words; emails and written communication; training; dedication and passion for your business and team.

What do you contribute each and every day that makes you a leader of yourself; your team and your company?

Those are some questions you want to answer as you relentlessly pursue leadership.

Let’s start with your vision, because it is really the start of all things.

How do you see yourself in your business? How do you see yourself in a leadership capacity?

Start with answering those questions because that is how others will see you, too. If your current vision does not match your future vision, begin to work on daily adjustments.

Make sure your daily actions are aligned with your core values as a person; a leader and who you want to become.

Does part of your leadership plan involve reading and growing yourself? Excellent, then lay out a monthly plan of what books you are going to be exploring and learning from.

Does your leadership plan involve growing your team each month, including adding new team partners to your front line? Great, how is your contact list doing? Is it full of possibilities and possibility thinkers? Are you making calls daily to offer the gift of your business?

Does your leadership plan involve goal setting for yourself and your team; along with sharing the team vision and goals and engaging and anchoring the team to that vision? I hope so, and so you want to begin to prepare that vision and set those goals; communicating with the team so they get involved, too.

That vision must be clear to you; and clear to the team. It should engage your senses; be written down; put together on a dream board or book; and something you look at and focus on daily.

Remember – like a fisherman, you must cast the net of your vision into the water if you expect to catch others in that vision!

Finally, expand your leadership capacity regularly through ongoing education – events and seminars, both company and generic; stepping into your own voice by leading calls and training; finding mentors to guide you further on the journey; sharing your knowledge as you grow with your emerging leaders.

Leadership is a journey, not a destination. Make it a journey filled with rich, meaningful experiences.

It happens to most of us at some point. We are just getting started and we get asked the “Dreaded Question” – How much are you making in your business?

That can be a real downer if you don’t know how to effectively deal with this question; give the person asking some good feedback and feel confident about your answer and your progress.

Here is what you want to do -

Plan a serious Business Launch – this gives you statistics that you can track and share.

Book your calendar as full as possible in the first 6-8 weeks. Or even create a 90 Day Action Plan.

Develop your income story.

Remember this – most people are asking this because they want to know what they can expect and if “this thing really works.” You don’t have to be earning $10,000 a month for there to be social proof. Making $800 in the first few weeks is enough to create significant interest among your prospects.

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of sales?

The overly aggressive person who is browbeating you to buy?

Someone who is busy rambling on about all of the amazing features of the product you are looking at but has done nothing to learn more about why you might be interested?

Often, in Direct Sales, Network Marketing and Party Plan, we say (or a prospect says):

I’m not good at sales. Or, I don’t like to sell.

What that REALLY means is that he or she does not want to become that pushy, aggressive sales type that we conjure up in our minds when we think of sales. And I say “Good!” We don’t want you to be that way.

So often when someone begins their career in Network Marketing, we tend to focus all on the money aspect of it – how much do you want to make this month? Next month? Next year? etc.

And, the important thing to keep in mind is that MONEY is nothing more than a means to an end. It’s not the tangible dollars that we want – it’s what that represents to us!

Getting kids out of day care; firing a boss who disrespects us; saying “I quit” before hearing – “You’ve been downsized.”

Make sure you always get to the heart of the WHY in your prospect or new team partner.

Here are four statements that are extremely common, especially among women, when asked what she is looking for in a business -

1. I want more time for my family.

2. I want XXX to be proud of me. (Often this is a parent or spouse.)

3. I want something of my own; to be able to say – I DID THIS!!!

4. I want respect.

So, your first step is to see how YOU might fit into this. For me, I wanted to be able to say – “I beat the odds! I made it to the top! I DID THIS!”

What is it for you?

Then, with that understanding within yourself, you can more easily get to and relate to the answers from your prospects or team partners.

Remember to ask “WHY is this important to you?” This takes is further in depth and gets even further into the why.

And, when you can connect a prospect or team partner to his/her why EMOTIONALLY, you have a much stronger chance for success!

The economy is down, right? People are looking for options – check! Are you sharing reasons WHY to join your business?

Are you showing people how to make extra cash and the exact steps that they will want to take to do that?

If you are in Party Plan; explain how to make an extra $400-1000 a month. Explain the power in retailing to recruit.

If you are more Network Marketing oriented, show them how to get a small group of loyal customers for the product or service you sell; and then recruit from there; and also show how to explain the business for those prospecting and recruiting conversations.

All of us are born with a natural set of skills and talents. Don’t be afraid to use these to your advantage in your Direct Sales business!

We hear the words constantly in Direct Sales and Network Marketing – “Yes, but does it duplicate?”

Ugh! I have to confess, I get so tired of hearing that because I feel that, without a solid explanation, some people are hindering their own success because they aren’t using their natural talents and skill sets to their advantage in their business.

Some people have no problem walking up to strangers and striking up a conversation and promoting their opportunity; others struggle with this. Some people have a budget for advertising and want to pursue this method for time effectiveness and generating leads.

Here is what must be duplicated – knowing how to talk to people; and talking to people. How we get there will vary.

Asking powerful questions and then engaging in powerful listening is the key to a healthy, thriving business with prospects interested in you; your products and your opportunity.

You’ve likely heard it before – people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. Sounds simple, but what does this mean, really?

It means that you want to give the most powerful gift you can when speaking to another – the gift of listening.

Instead, what most Direct Sellers do is ask one question and then pounce! We begin to spout off facts, figures, statistics on the pay plan; details on the patents that are pending; how these are the best products and the star fleet commander bonus with the Rambo-style payout is sure to be the best you’ve ever seen.

Ewwww. Yuck. Who cares.

What does that have to do with getting my kids out of day care? Helping me fire my boss? Making my life better?

Here is what your prospect is thinking: “All of that sounds complicated and confusing and my life is already complicated and confusing.”

So, here are three tips to change that and take your prospect from disinterested and confused; to genuinely interested in knowing more.

1. FAYC – Forget About Yourself Completely. Lose your agenda. Yeah, I know you have one. We all do. You wanna get this person to book a party; sign up on Auto Ship; make you rich! However, your agenda only serves to get in the way. Make your interaction totally about your prospect. Pay attention to the number of questions you ask vs. the number of facts you spew.

2.  Ask a question and then listen without pre-planning your response. “Jane, you mentioned that the early morning “day care drops” are killing you. The kids are unhappy; crying; begging you not to go; and you are arriving at work worn out; guilty and frustrated. Have you thought about how you are going to change this and create what you want in your life?”

Now, don’t say another word. Zip it! Let Jane talk it out. If she offers clues that a home business; or some type of change might be on her agenda, ask more probing questions. Don’t hop in with your opportunity right away. Keep delving further and further into her need and her plans so you can learn as much as possibly.

Then, and only then, you might say something like – “Well, based on what you’ve said, it sounds like you might be looking to leave your current job and find something more flexible (or whatever fits what she told you.) Is that right?”

Make sure you have complete clarity before continuing.

Here is where you make the invitation. Don’t confuse this with the business presentation.

“Jane, I’m not sure if this would be a fit for you, but I’ve started a home business on the side, and it’s going pretty well. I’ve determined a business plan to help me quit my job in the next 12 – 18 months. I would love to show you how it works and let you decide if this might help you leave XYZ company and be working from home with your children by your side. When would be a good time for us to get together for about 30 minutes?”

Proceed with setting the appointment and don’t get dragged into giving the whole presentation. This is the valley of death for most people. Set the stage with interest and set the appointment.

3.  When you get together, review Jane’s “why” and what got you started in the conversation to begin with. Remember to continue making it about Jane and how you might help her solve her problem. Use your company’s business presentation tools, and interject things that keep Jane engaged and move her to seeing how she could do this, too, and it is her answer!

People like doing business with those who they know, like and trust. Having a genuine interest in others is the best way to establish that foundation and grow it from there.

Ask yourself – How do others see me in my business? How do I want others to see me in my business?

You want to make sure that people know you are sincere and not out to just “get the sign up!”

Have you ever been in the coffee shop and overhead a Network Marketer giving a “spiel?” You know, over hyping an opportunity; making huge claims and sounding outrageous? That’s “Selling” and a “Spiel.”

You will find much more success when you engage your prospect’s interest by asking questions; being truly interested and finding a need and filling it.

So, how can you best serve your prospects? What need would your opportunity or products fill? Try a new approach and see what happens!

You have great products and a great opportunity, right? Use these as a valuable resource to make $800 – $1500 a month in retail profit; and model for others how they are going to get paid as well.  We often skip this very important step in BEING in business. Customers are a big part of it and sales is not a dirty word.

You will have people asking you how they can do this, too. This sets you up for nice, residual income as well.

The power in immediate cash through retail is that it also provides a marketing budget for your business.  Teach people how to fund their business building efforts through their business and not from their family budget.

Network Marketers have asked this question for decades and although the answer will vary depending on who you ask, there is really only one right answer – lead with a solution.

No one ever bought a drill because they wanted a drill – instead, it’s a hole in the wall that they are after. The drill provides the solution. Likewise, very few people ever wake up and say – “Hey, I think I will join a Network Marketing company today. I want to be a MLM Professional.”

What really happens is they wake up and say – “I’m tired of my Boss; I’m tired of my job; I need more money; I want more control; etc.”

Or, if they are in search of a solution for something that your product line offers, that’s what they are looking for.

Your goal then is to determine what solution your “product” can offer and offer that solution. By “product”, that can be either the product of opportunity, if your prospect is looking for more money or a financial solution. Or, it can be your actual company product line, if your prospect is looking for a solution that can be solved through your products.

This is where defining your target market becomes critical. Yes, everyone “could” be right for the opportunity product, but not everyone will be interested and so why waste your time or theirs?

Your number one goal is to find people each day who have a need that your business can offer a viable solution for and then offer that solution. From there, it’s up to your prospect to decide if that solution is right for them.

You are a solutions provider! And the more solutions you can offer to more problems, the bigger your check will grow!
